Bugs Week Three

Book - Bugs, Bugs, Bugs

Movement - Catch the Bugs
I got my plastic bugs out and laid them all over the yard.  The kids got their bug nets out and went to pick up as many as they could.  They loved this game and wanted to play over and over again.

Learning - Fill the Bug Jar
I printed a picture of a mason jar.  Got my plastic bugs out.  I have a big dice and on two sides (5 and 6) I put post it note over it and wrote bug spray on one and fly swatter on the other.  I explained that they are trying to fill their jar the first.  If they land on a number they have to count the dots and add that many bugs to their jar.  If they land on fly swatter they have to remove one bug.  If they land on bug spray they have to empty their jar.  They loved this game!!!!

Learning - Spider Web
I made a spider web out of tape.  I placed letters on the spider web.  I explained that the spider is coming to eat the letters and we need to save them.  To save them we have to name the letter and the sound it makes.

Art/Craft - Snails
I was going to use paper plates but ran out:/  Luckily I had some cake decorating circles.  So I got that out and used permanent marker to make the snail shell.  I cut a little snail body out of colored paper and taped it to the bottom of the shell.  I let the kids decorate their snails.

Game - Perfection
A fun game to get them to go fast and beat the timer.

Book - Froggy's First Kiss

Movement - Play dough
Got some pipe cleaner and goggly eyes out and let them make bugs or just play with the play dough.

Learning - Feed the Frog
I printed a picture of a frog and taped it to an empty fishy cracker box.  And then cut a hole where the mouth was.  I got my letters out.  I told the kids that frogs like to eat bugs and he is super hungry. So we feed him our "bug" letters.  To feed them they had to name the letter and its sound.

Learning - Stomp on the Bugs
I put bugs on the floor and on the other side they had a number on them.  I told the kids that the bugs were taking over the house and we had to stomp on them and get them out. So they took turns stomping on a bug and then naming the number on the back.  They really got into this and were stomping and smashing away.  It was cute to watch.  The boys sure do love physical activities:)

Art/Craft - Drawing
I just got out paper today and let them draw.  Since we were talking about bugs they all drew bugs.

Game  - Fishing
We got our fishing game out and went fishing.  Always a fun game.

And now onto SUMMER BREAK!!!!!!!

Bugs Week Two

Book - Diary of Worms

Movement - Spider Web
We sat in a circle and would throw the ball of yarn to someone and kept doing that until we made a spider web.

Learning - Bug Sound Matching
I printed pictures of different bugs.  Then laid my letter magnets out.   They picked a picture out of a basket and had to match the bugs beginning sound with the letter.  (Ant - A)

Learning - Get the Bugs off (numbers)
I printed out bugs and put numbers on them.  They took turns taking the bug off of me and naming the number.  We then put bugs on them and they had to name the numbers to get them off.  We have started working on naming numbers 10-20 this week.

Art/Craft - Fly Swatter Painting
This is one of my favorite art project we have done.  They loved swatting the paper with paint and it turned out pretty cute.  This should be done outside.  Put different color of paint on paper plates and then and piece of paper on the floor.  Let them have a fly swatter and swatting away they go.

Game - Guess Who
This game is great to get them to explain and describe objects.  The Guess Who game we have is objects not people.  Its a hard concept for them to know what to ask but they had fun.

Book - The Busy Bug

Movement - Bug Action Cards
I found the cards on this website http://www.oopseydaisyblog.com/2011/08/i-is-for-insects-mommy-school.html.  The kids really liked acting like bugs as we played a few times.

Learning - Swat the Bug
I laid out my letters on the floor and told the kids they were letter bugs.  I would call out a letter sound and they had to find the letter that makes that sound and swat it with a fly swatter.  They loved doing this.  They love the fly swatter.

Learning - Bug Spray
I drew bugs on the sidewalk and put numbers on them.  I would call out a number and they would spray that number with water as fast as they could.  They love using spray bottles.

Art/Craft - Painting with Bugs
I have plastic little bugs I let the kids dip in paint and pretend to crawl over paper.

Game - Matching
I got a matching game out.  Always good to practice taking turns and winning and losing.

Bugs Week One

Book - Bug Safari

Movement - Bug Spray
I colored bugs onto a white garbage bag with waterproof markers.  Then hung it up outside.  I let the kids have spray bottles and spray the bugs off.  This was a lot of fun and they thought it was so cool to watch the bugs spray off and the colors mix together.

Learning - Get the Bugs Off
I printed out pictures of bugs and put letters on them.  I then taped them all over myself and told the kids I needed help getting the bugs off of me.  They took a bug of and named the letter and its sound. They thought this was silly.  And they wanted to have the bugs on them so we took turns but bugs ion each other and then taking them off.

Learning - Colorful Bug
I printed a picture of a beetle and put numbers on its shell.  The kids took turns rolling two dice.  They had to count all the dots and then find that number on the bug.  When they found the number they used daubers to mark the number.  We played until they colored the whole bug.

Art/Craft - Rock Bugs
We went outside to find each kid a rock.  We cleaned them in the sink and then painted them.  After painting we glued eyes on and I was planning to let them cut and glue pipe cleaners but realized I was all out.  So we called them our rock slugs:)

Game - Ants in Pants
Always a fun game to get out.

Book - Diary of a Worm

Movement - Bug Hunt
I got bug nets and magnifying glasses for each kid and we went in our back yard to find as many bugs as we can.  This was so fun.  We found bugs but the most exciting thing was we found a frog.

Learning - Bug Matching
I printed out pictures of 16 spiders and on the opposite side I wrote words on them.  The took turns picking to spider and I read the words.  They had to tell me whether it matched or not.  They got to keep the spiders if it rhymed.  We did this until all the spiders were gone.

Learning - Save the Flies
I put tape up to look like a spider web.  I printed pictures of flies and put them on the web.  On the back of the flies I wrote numbers.  They had to pull the flies of and name the number before the spider ate them.  We are starting to recognize numbers above 10 now.

Art/Craft - Bugged Out Hat
The kids glued and colored pieces of the hat.
Really easy and the kids loved them.  They wore them the rest of the day.

Game - Cooties
This game takes a little while so they struggled with finishing but enjoyed it for the most part.

Movement - Flower Walk
We went to pick wild flowers and plants that we thought were cool.  So we could use for our art project later.  The simplest activities often make them the happiest.  They loved it!  We collected our cool finds in ziplock bags.

Learning - Pick the Flowers
I cut out 26 flower shapes and wrote a letter on them.  Then I laid them all over the yard.  They had to "pick" the flowers and name the sound.  They enjoyed it and it was even more fun because the wind was blowing and kept blowing my flowers away so it became a game of chase the flowers:)

Learning - Water the Flowers
I drew flowers on the sidewalk with chalk and wrote numbers 0-10 on the flowers.  I would say a number and the kids had to spray/water the flower with the number on it.  They love playing with spray bottles.

Art/Craft  - Flower Collage
They got the flowers and plants out that they collected on our walk.  I laid contact paper down and they went to town sticking flowers/plants on the contact paper.

Game - Flower Cake Walk
I cut out large flowers and laid them in a circle on the ground.  I played music and they walked on the flowers.  And when the music stopped they stopped.  They had to name the color of flower they landed on.

Wednesday's Schedule - Bird's

Book - Mouse's First Spring

Movement - Eat the Worms
I cut pieces of yarn and laid them around the room.  They had to use clothes pins and collect the worms like they were birds using their beaks.  They really liked this activity and we did it over and over again.
